Urgent funding for the Republic of Congo

Organization: Terre Sans Frontières (TSF)

Areas: Health – Nutrition – Protection

General Context

The Republic of Congo currently hosts nearly 60,000 refugees, primarily from the Democratic Republic of the Congo and the Central African Republic, as well as internally displaced persons and local communities in dire need, 400 000 people overall.

These populations face serious challenges:

  • Limited access to basic healthcare

  • Low vaccination coverage

  • High malnutrition, especially among children under 5

  • Increased vulnerability to infectious diseases (HIV/AIDS, Monkey pox, Cholera)

Impact of the USAID Closure

The closure of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) caused a sudden disruption in funding, resulting in:

  • The cessation of vital health, nutrition, and epidemic prevention projects

  • A sharp decline in TSF's operational capacity

  • An increased risk of deterioration of the humanitarian situation

TSF's Role in the Republic of Congo

For several years, working directly with the UNHCR, WFP, UNICEF, and WHO, TSF has been working alongside refugees and host communities with priority interventions in:

  • Childhood vaccination to reduce preventable mortality

  • Prevention and management of malnutrition

  • Prevention and control of HIV/AIDS, including screening and support

  • Prevention of Monkey pox and Cholera through awareness-raising and community support

Needs and Objectives

TSF is requesting urgent financial support to:

  • Restart suspended projects and ensure the continuity of essential service

  • Strengthen maternal and child health

  • Prevent epidemics through vaccination and information campaigns

  • Provide medical and social monitoring for people living with HIV/AIDS

  • Support the resilience of host communities

Target Population

  • Refugees (mainly from the DRC and CAR)

  • Internally displaced persons in fragile areas

  • Local host communities (Likouala, Pointe-Noire, Djambala)

Expected Results

  • Improved childhood vaccination coverage

  • Reduction in cases of severe malnutrition

  • Prevention of local epidemics

Duration and Projected Budget

Duration: 12 months, renewable

Requested Contribution: $500,000

Period: September 2025 to March 2026

The closure of USAID must not result in the abandonment of the most vulnerable populations in Congo. TSF remains committed and operational, but without rapid support from financial partners, thousands of lives will be at risk.

We appeal to your solidarity to preserve humanitarian achievements, restart halted projects, and prevent a funding crisis from turning into a major humanitarian crisis.
